History Hundreds and thousands of years ago, the ancient peoples believed in animal spirits called talismans. These talismans guided them and helped them throughout their life, first revealing themselves in dreams. When they were ready, the talismans showed them how to morph into their animal form.
The Native Americans felt a particular connection with the talismans. Learning to work in harmony with their spirit guides, their culture flourished for many years. However, as the years passed, the Native Americans faded into the background, growing distant and secluded while the white men expanded and grew into their time.
One white man in particular, his name unknown, began destroying the land, living in hate. The spirits of the Indians in the heavens and stars had to do something. They gave him a talisman, hoping its wisdom could lead him to greatness. His talisman, a bear, tried to guide him to the right path, but the man was too obsessed with his new found ability. He abused the talisman and wreaked even more havoc on the land. Stunned, the Indians sent more talismans to other people, hoping that their good could conquer his desire for power. This was the beginning of an age-long conflict, a conflict between those who would abuse their power and those who would use it for good.
Today Over the hundreds of years, these talismans gradually evolved to be part of us. You are born with your spirit by your side, but wouldn't learn what it was until you matured and it believed you were ready. Then the talisman would appear in your dreams to guide you and to someday allow you to transform at will into their animal form. If, however, your talisman has not yet revealed itself to you, you are known as a Seeker. Sometimes it takes a long time for you to be deemed ready for the talisman to appear—a late bloomer, so to speak. Others are never 'touched' by their talisman and would live their lives to the end without it.
The day your talisman reveals itself, you are known as an Undecided. Being an Undecided is dangerous, for both the Hunters and the Innocents—the two shifter factions that have been at war for centuries—will try to persuade you to join their forces, doing whatever it takes.
Hunters referred to those who would use their talismans to achieve their own ends, regardless of whom they harmed. When they saw an Innocent or Undecided with a useful talisman, they would track them down and somehow persuade them to join the Hunter forces, whether by simple persuasion or by force. Rumors of magic used to bind uncooperative talismans to their will abound, fomenting further fear and suspicion.
The Innocents stood in direct opposition to the Hunters. Though founded on idealistic grounds—according to them, to fight the power-hungry—the Innocents’ actions soon caused them to become as notorious as the Hunters. People on either side were willing to do whatever it took to defeat the other.
The Innocents and Hunters have been fighting for so long that time has twisted their original purposes, of which no-one is certain anymore. Both sides, having once committed unforgivable acts, perpetuated the vicious cycle of never-ending conflict. Each Innocent’s and Hunter’s motives differ, but the members of each group are united in one respect: opposition to the other.
In a small town in southern Canada called Noatak, a young woman is putting together a force to try to bring the Hunters to justice and free the Innocents who have been forced to serve under them. Her parents have given her their task: to crush the Hunters and protect the Innocents, Undecideds and Seekers. But she cannot do it alone.
Whom will you choose to join? Choose wisely, for your spirit depends on it.
