Kai looked pretty young to be traveling light, but Onji didn't press him for details. Everyone had a story, and it was fine by her if he wanted to keep his untold for now. Just because she was curious--because she always was, really--didn't mean she could forget her manners, especially now that she was playing host.
Distracted momentarily by Reyes's guitar--it had been years since she'd played herself, her old acoustic was probably moldering away in her parents' basement somewhere--Onji almost didn't notice the expression on Kai's face and his sudden departure. She barely managed a "Right, see you in a bit," before he vanished toward the restroom.
Her cup clinked gently as she set it down again, frowning slightly and making as if she might want to go after him, but she thought better of it and all but collapsed back into her usual slouch. He'd left his luggage here and he'd want to come back for that; she figured he wasn't going to make a break for it for some inexplicable reason.
"Huh," she said thoughtfully. This directed at Reyes, who was still tuning his guitar. "Weird kid. Polite, though. That's points in my book. I guess you've been here pretty long, yeah?"

Kai was okay, but in a split second he no longer looked fine. His face became a bit more ashen then what was healthy, and he excused himself to the washroom. Reyes was a little worried and watched him leave. His gait looked fine, but there was no doubt he wouldn’t be so well once he reached the restroom. He thought for a moment to go after the kid, but decided against it. If Kai were to vomit, Reyes would probably have a fit. Stupid erythrophobia.
He went back to fiddling with the old acoustic. “Yep, been here for a few years. Nice place to escape city life, you know?” Of course she knew. Nobody would move from a tiny town to another tiny town, it was always tiny town to big city or vice versa. Sometimes it was big city to big city. Reyes had his fair share of big international big cities, so he was in a small town now and he found it to his liking.
“Where did you come from?” Another glance at the washroom. He hoped Kai was okay, the kid just needed to relax. “Victoria? Halifax? Toronto? Big city, right?”

Kai took a deep long look into the mirror. Considering the fact that back at home the mirrors were to scratched up or graffiti infested that ones image behind the mirrors were always distorted, He was quite surprised that the mirrors here were in such good condition. He washed his face quickly and made his way out to meet up with his “welcoming committee”. He made a large smile on his face and sat back down where he was sitting before. “Ummm, did I miss anything?” he asked as he looked around the room. He felt odd leaving everyone so suddenly and then popping back in as nothing happened. Hopefully, the just accept that fact and just move on. Although, he secretly had a feeling that it wouldn’t always be a secret forever.
“If there is anything I can do to repay you, please ask me,” He still felt guilty for accepting charity from people he just met.
(OOC: sorry for it being short. My mind is a bit scrambled right now)

"It is a nice place," said Onji, managing to keep most of the sarcasm out of her voice. She supposed in some ways it might be considered 'nice' - the quiet, the close community atmosphere, or whatever the hell it was they put on those brochures to entice people out here. She just wasn't sure it was worth having if she had to give up proper restaurants and Asian grocery stores to get it.
“Where did you come from? Victoria? Halifax? Toronto? Big city, right?”
She grinned then, nodding slightly. "Toronto born and bred. That obvious, huh. I guess I'm a city girl through and through. Wouldn't ordinarily be out here, but I'm working on my PhD in environmental science and--" she shrugged --"nothing quite like a hands-on experience. Or so my advisor said."
It was, she reflected, a solid cover story, and not entirely untrue in its own right. It was probably the geek in her--wanted to find out just how a higher concentration of predators in a given town would affect the ecosystem here. Granted, she hadn't seen many Hunters or Innocents taking advantage of the local deer and rabbit population. Presumably they all preferred to eat processed food. More fool them. Game tasted better and, more importantly, was free.
She looked up and waved as Kai returned, smiling. He hadn't been smiling before, had he? Interesting. "Good to have you back," she said cheerfully. "We were just talking about where we're from. You the big city sort, too?"

“Ah, Toronto. Never been there myself, but I hear the downtown core is beautiful.” Another pause as Reyes glanced up at the washroom again. Kai did seem to be taking his sweet time, but he guessed he should keep his business his own. Looking at Yueying, she seemed the sort of person to get into environmental sciences. Maybe it was her glasses or something else, but she was the sort. Yes.
Reyes really wasn’t too much of an outdoorsman, but he could survive if tossed out into the woods alone. It might’ve been the caribou in him, but he could survive off grass, foliage and lake water for weeks, longer if he was shifted. Meat, however, didn’t really sit well with him. He ate it on occasion, but that’s it.
Then Kai came back and Reyes lit up again. He looked like the city type too, but he was unsure from where. “I’ve lived in dozens of places before Noatak. California to nameless villages in Asia, just about anywhere you can think of.” Reyes did a lot of traveling, trying to avoid who he was avoiding and keeping his head low. Of course, he had some help along the way. “So where’re you from, Kai?”

Kai was impressed by where Reyes has been. It seemed like he’s been in a lot of places around the world. Again another thing he really wanted to do. But, with the lack of money, he doubted he would be able to pull it off. He wasn’t really a risk taker, so he could never must enough courage to pull a stunt like that though. “I’m sure you had lots of fun seeing all of those places…” Kai began to image all of the places Reyes could of gone too, places he could only dream of going too. Then his mind was then snapped back into reality when he was asked where he was from.
“Well, I use to live in California…yep…the Golden State…” said Kai in a low tone. He’d rather prefer not to talk about his past life. But, still something made him feel like he could trust these people. “Yea, I came up here since…well…it’s a bit hard to explain…” he wanted to tell them the whole thing. But, he knew it wouldn’t be wise to tell people you just met that you’re a family failure because you couldn’t “change”. “I guess could say my family and I didn’t really see eye to eye.”
By this time the restaurant was getting a bit more crowded. To be more specific, a bit too crowded. “Umm, would you guys want to go. It’s getting really crowded and It seems pretty nice right now outside,” he suggested as he checked around to see if she left anything around. He didn’t want to leave anything behind because well, he didn’t really have much with him.

So Reyes was well-traveled, or certainly sounded it. Onji's expression turned thoughtful. People who traveled that much either had wanderlust, like her roommate, or had something to hide. She was inclined to think the former--maybe she was just buying into the traveling musician thing too much. It didn't really affect anything, anyway. "You're gonna have to tell me about those villages sometime. I haven't really lived in any other places besides big cities."
Kai, on the other hand, had neatly dodged her question about whether or not he was the city sort. Then again, he probably had little reason to trust them; if he'd run away from his family as he implied, he'd probably be hesitant to divulge any extra information about himself. That wasn't the sort of thing you bragged about, especially if your family had talismans in the blood. Which was a bit of a jump to make, but who else came to Noatak these days? Besides, his increasing nervousness about the growing number of patrons in the café wasn't helping his case.
But that was all right; Onji let it slip for now. She was sure she could find out soon enough.
"Sure, I don't mind." She decided not to remark on the fact that it was well below freezing outside; presumably Kai was dressed for the occasion. "A little fresh air would do me good. You up for it, Reyes?"

"California, never been." Reyes shrugged and took another sip of his coffee. He heard it was really sunny and the whole shebang over there, but he'd been to Florida, so he could guess they were similar. He still had a few friends back in Florida, and he thought of saying hi to them again if he had the time. And, also along the same vein, he needed to send that bundle of flowers to his friend in the States. The Japanese man had a lot of catching up to do.
But then Kai's comment ripped him back into reality. He wanted to go outside, even if it was freeze-the-balls-off-a-pool-table bitter out there. Maybe the colourful clothes were warmer then they looked, but Reyes was dressed a little less then that. He hesitated for a moment, unsure if he wanted to risk getting a cold for a pair of new friends. In the end, he figured a little bit if sniffling wasn't so bad.
"Alright, where do you wanna go?" He figured it would just be out to the balcony or something, as nobody was out there. Reyes began packing up his guitar, making sure not to get anything scratched up as he placed it back in the case. He'd play here some other day, maybe some time during the week.

“Well, to the mall maybe?” said Kai hesitantly. Truth be told, he didn’t feel comfortable going to a public place like the mall all by himself. It made him feel somewhat a loner, which he technically is for the time being. He wondered if he was being a bit to paranoid about it. But, he couldn’t help it, he had two new friends and best to stick together. Besides, before he got here some people looked at him as if he was going to be their meal or something. Nothing like company to keep “those” guys off your back. It was then that he began to wonder if people can also “change”.
“You know what’s funny. On the way here I thought I saw a guy change into a deer or was it an elk? I don’t know. Funny right?” he said. He didn’t want to come of being the curious worried brat that asks about everything. At least this way they would bring something up without having him ask about it. Kai stepped out of the restaurant only to be greeted by a bone-chilling gust of wind. Luckily he was wearing the necessary clothing to withstand it, even though his face felt like ice after the gust. Just then he got worried if the others thought it was to cold.
“Is it too cold outside? Do you guys want to stay for a while longer?”

"Might as well," said Onji, draining her cup and setting it down. To tell the truth, she could have done with another coffee, but some prioritizing was in order here. Besides, she wasn't entirely sure she had the money for it. "We can stop by the music store while we're at it, if you like. No harm in starting a job hunt early."
She was silent for a moment after Kai's question, one eyebrow quirking skyward as she pushed her chair in and headed after the kid. "Funny you should ask that," she said, keeping her voice light and speaking a little louder to be heard over the wind. She didn't want to be the one to answer it--best to deflect the question to Reyes. There was no telling what the right answer was at the moment, and Yueying-the-biologist didn't particularly want to reveal her own status either.
"Don't think I've ever seen a guy change into an elk," she said, which was more or less true. She hadn't known anyone with an elk talisman in Toronto. "'ve you ever seen weird shit like that around town, Reyes? And don't worry about the cold, I'm used to it."

Reyes got up, slinging the guitar case over his shoulders so it lay against his back. He was waiting for the other two to finish at this point, when Kai spoke up.
“You know what’s funny. On the way here I thought I saw a guy change into a deer or was it an elk? I don’t know. Funny right?”
"Ehehe, yeaaaah, funny. Right." Reyes chuckled nervously, but averted his eyes and stared towards the door. He followed the kid out the door, but kept eye contact to a bare minimum. He didn't know any elks, but a deer he did know, and that's what made him nervous. Of course, there are plenty of other people out there with a deer talisman, but the very mention of it still put him on edge.
"Weather's fine, and no, I haven't really seen anything lately." He shrugged once and tipped his head to the side, staring at the back of Kai's head. His hair was nice, he noticed. "I mean, Noatak is a town in the middle of Canadian nothing. There isn't much that goes unnoticed here." Well, he was partially telling the truth here. There wasn't widespread media coverage when he built that shark on his roof, nor did anybody notice when that crate that contained a live caribbean reef squid arrived at his doorstep.
"Okay, mall's this way," Reyes herded the other two in the right direction, smiling once again. He would forget about it until something actually happened. He didn't know what he'd do then.
