Tristan liked audiences; he'd always gotten top marks in Drama, but he never played around when it came to his job. Everything he'd told Clara was true, and she really seemed interested in what he was saying, unlike his last bimbo girlfriend. Then again, that had been in high school, and everyone had been immature then, including himself.
As the student stopped to give them their milkshakes, he smiled. Tristan eagerly grabbed his milkshake, and immediately drank almost a third of it. He'd hoped that it would ease his hunger, but all it had done was given him a bigger craving for pizza. The smells eminating from the kitchen were mouth watering, but if they were done, they would have been told, he guessed.
As he slowly started sipping the rest of the milkshake, he was momentarily stunned by Clara's beaming look. Even when I was a little kid I didn't mind blood and that sort of stuff. An embarrassed chuckle escaped his lips. There's no way I can watch that stuff in movies though. It was true, he couldn't sit through a horror movie for the life of him.
Why, thank you. I wouldn't mind hanging out sometime, in that case. He almost choked on his milkshake. Wait, was she proposing a date? Keep your cool man. Another megawatt smile for her. Sure. Whenever you want. She seemed so innocent, but she was playing all the right cards with him, that's for sure. Flattery will get you everywhere, but it will also make people suspicious. Clara hadn't given him any reason to doubt her however, and he looked forward to their (quote unquote) date. And eating his pizza too.

"I've never been one for any of that stuff. I don't like horror movies, either, to be honest." She grinned at him. "It's weird enough seeing myself bleed, you know? I don't like to have to see other people hurt too."
Maybe that was a little selfish of her, she reflected. She had better reasons for not wanting to participate in the medical field than that, like her impulsiveness and her complete and total lack of skill when it came to anything scientific. But those weren't the ones she considered all that important. It wasn't anything as simple as not loving the job as much as it was not wanting to let down people she didn't even know.
Sure. Whenever you want. Tristan's voice was certainly calm and collected, but his broad smile clearly said otherwise. Well, if he thought it was a date, Clara didn't particularly mind. First dates were generally on the casual side for her, and that was the way she liked it.
"I guess now'd probably be a good time to ask what your hobbies are, wouldn't it?" she laughed. "There isn't much to do in Noatak, but I know the town inside and out, so I'm sure we'll be able to find something."

Clara's reassurances that she didn't like horror movies any more than he did were somewhat relieving. At least they had somewhat similar tastes in movies. I don't like to have to see other people hurt too. Tristan added compassion and kindness to his already lenghy list of qualities he liked in her.
Allowing Clara to think for a minute, Tristan wondered how she'd gotten stuck working in a music store. If someone had asked his opinion on the matter, he would have said she could be a teacher, or a talkshow host. Clara seemed to have a way of putting him at ease, and she made it simple to have a conversation with her.
I guess now'd probably be a good time to ask what your hobbies are, wouldn't it? Her exquisite laugh tumbled out again, making him beam at her. I love swimming, reading Shakespeare and playing my guitar. I've lived in the city most of my life, so I've been discovering outdoorsy stuff since I got here. Like last week, a guy I met at work took a bunch of his buddies and I out fishing with them, and I loved it. Nodding his head in her direction, he took a sip of his milkshake. You're turn. What do you do for fun?
She'd said there wasn't much to do, but Tristan had found that what there was to do in Noatak was more worth doing than the junk that he'd done in the city. When he'd caught his first fish on the guys boat, it had been more exciting than any video game he'd ever played in his life, by far. There'd been no comparison between the smooth remote controls, and the slimy, alive fish that he'd held carefully in his hand. He laughed at his own silliness, trying not to seem too weird, but enjoying the moment nonetheless.

Shakespeare! Tristan didn't know it yet, but that was a massive point in his favor. Not too many guys would admit to that in public. Granted, she'd just told him she was an English major, and maybe he was trying to get further on her good side or something, but that wasn't something to worry about right now. The truth would out, as it were.
"I guess I've taken the outdoorsy stuff for granted, then," she said, smiling a little at that. "Noatak is gorgeous, but when I was growing up, all I really wanted to do was get out of town. Coming back from university has made me appreciate my surroundings a little more, though."
She swirled her milkshake a little, watching the pink and white drift in slow, thick circles. "I love running--I was on the track team for years and years, I love the feel of the wind blowing past my hair. And reading's got its perks, but I think you've probably guessed that one already." A grin.
"Mostly I like talking to people, though. This place is so tiny, you know? I never used to meet new people until I graduated and moved back, and now suddenly all sorts of people I've never met before are in town. It's kind of cool."

It was slightly embarrassing, to admit that he read Shakespeare, and liked it too. Tristan’s favorites were A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, and, of course, Romeo and Juliet, not that he was going to tell Clara that. She'd probably think he was either lying to her, or a fruit.
Noatak is gorgeous, Her sentance continued, but Tristan had lost focus for the moment. Yes it is, and it's people aren't so bad either. His eyes ran over her face and hair again, re-noting the brilliant red colour that seemed to be dominant over her features. Usually he went for brunettes, but a redhead could definitely work for him, now that he thought about it.
Maybe they could go on a hike or something unusual like that. How many people did stuff like that on a first date anyways? Probably almost no one. But a movie was to cliche . . . unless Clara liked cliche, in which case a movie was perfect. Grinning at his own contradictory thoughts, Tristan watched her stir her milkshake and talk about running. He agreed with the whole wind-blowing-threw-your-hair being nice, and he especially like doing it in the mornings.
I know. It's bigger than I expected, but the perfect size if you ask me. He opened his mouth to say something else, when a person from behind the counter yelled, "Orders up!" and placed several pizza's on the counter. Sighing, Tristan started to rise, making sure that Clara was getting up too before hedding to the counter. Finally. He wasn't as hungry anymore though, full of happiness and something else.

Clara slid off her stool with her milkshake, nodding slightly as she headed to the counter with Tristan. "Not a bad place to live, then, I guess," she teased as they collected their pizzas. Hers had taken a little longer than she'd thought it would, but she hardly minded now.
"Well," she decided as they returned to their seats, "I guess we have to get you used to the great outdoors, city boy. What little there is to do here is definitely all outdoors. A hike or a biking trip or something might be in order, don't you think?"
She'd always found the woods relaxing to begin with; they were part of the reason why she'd decided to come back. If Tristan liked the outdoors as well, so much the better.

Grinning at Clara’s teasing, he poked her arm as they reached the counter. No, it’s not so bad. I mean you were born here and you turned out fine, so how bad could it be? He laughed along with her, grinning like an idiot but not really caring for once. It was nice to be able to just relax in female company, or any company at all. That pizza had better be good for taking so long to make it. He wasn't really mad, since it was worth waiting for dinner to meet a new person.
At Clara's suggestion that they go hiking or cycling, Tristan got pretty excited. Was this actually happening to him, or was it a perfect dream? To top it all off, his pizza smelled delicious, and after pulling out a slice he eagerly took several large bites and swallowed before answering. I think a hike would be cool. I haven't really had much time for exploring and it would be neat to check out the scenery. But whatever you prefer is fine with me. His tone clearly implied that as long as she was with him he'd do just about anything she suggested.
After finishing off the first slice, Tristan quickly worked into his second. No matter what she suggested, he was very likely to go along with whatever she wanted to do, just to be in her company. It was rare to find someone who shared as many interests and hit it off with them right away. Before starting his third slice of pizza, Tristan paused long enough to ask another question. When exactly did you want to have this little adventure? His tone was casual, but his sparkling eyes belied his relaxed demeanor, and Tristan leaned slightly closer over the table.

Clara waited until Tristan had started on his pizza before answering--after all, he'd sounded hungry enough before they'd started talking, to say nothing of how hungry he must be by now.
"A hike sounds great to me. I know a few quiet places in the mountains with great views of the lake and the surrounding forest. We can go once the leftover snow has melted away." She didn't miss the tone of his voice and grinned slightly; frankly she was up for anything if it meant making a new friend.
She started on her own pizza as she thought. "Does next week sound good? I've got work most days until then, but I think I have Thursday off. It sounds like my schedule's a lot more flexible than yours, though." She laughed. "I think an EMT's hours tend to be a little more rigorous, to say the least."
