Maybe it was because it was so difficult to get her to smile, but Aras was oddly pleased when the faintest of smiles appeared on Aurelia's lips as she took the bag. Given the contents of the bag, there must have been a certain degree of wryness in the smile, but it was a smile nonetheless.
When she mentioned something about getting Reyes to fix the wall, his face fell a bit. It wasn't that he disliked the man, but the idea of Reyes knowing where he lived was... well, Aras couldn't even begin to imagine what sorts of crack-induced schemes he'd be subject to if Reyes ever showed up at his door. The neighbors would surely have something to say about it--as if last night weren't bad enough. "I can take care of that. Don't worry about it."
Opening the door, Aurelia stepped outside only to trip over one of two small children running full-tilt down the hallway. Aras leaned past the threshold to get a better view; the boy and girl, who looked to be about kindergarten-age, were undeniably familiar. A woman's voice, also familiar, called after them.
With a sinking feeling, he turned around to come face-to-face with the Lorentzes.
"Mornin'." His voice was unmistakable, even it didn't sound nearly as peeved as it did in the early hours of the morning. "Slept well last night?" Mr. Lorentz deadpanned the line.
With a muttered greeting, Aurelia practically booked it down the hallway, leaving Aras alone with his neighbors. Good riddance, the vulture grunted, but Aras was a bit preoccupied to tell it to behave.
"Um... yeah," he said lamely, aware that his ears were probably a peculiar shade of maroon. That Aurelia had run off with barely a word did not help his case in the slightest. He only just stopped himself from asking them the same question--that would have earned him a glare from the usually-stoic Mr. Lorentz--and instead wished them a good day, shutting the door a bit too quickly behind himself.
