That Reyes' life had not been all flowers and sunshine should not have come as a surprise--no-one was without his fair share of troubles, after all--but it was still difficult to imagine the cheerful, happy-go-lucky man as... well, anything but. Aras had to wonder how many people would willingly take (or already took) advantage of that trusting nature. For Reyes' sake, he hoped very few. Aras didn't like to think ill of people in general, but the recent years had made it difficult not to harbor a fairly cynical attitude towards such things.
“How long have we been here?” Aurelia asked, and before either of them could check, her phone went off. She gave a start. The call was evidently unexpected. Aras waited patiently as she picked up, glad for the respite; since they had broached the topic of talismans, the tension between them had been nearly palpable.
"Partner? Why would I need a..." Feeling her eyes on him, he looked back at her to find that she staring at him with an expression of utter disbelief. He returned the look with a frown. He could hazard a guess as to the nature of her conversation, but surely that couldn't be...
No sooner had she snapped close her phone than his own rang. His incredulous expression mirroring the one Aurelia had worn mere moments ago, Aras barely caught the "Hey, partner," before he picked up.
A long pause. "Partn--? You've got to be kidding me," he said weakly, still looking at Aurelia. "Yes, I got it. Right. Yeah." He hung up.
She had gotten to her feet. Polishing off the rest of his coffee, Aras followed suit. Not trusting himself to say anything until they found a safe place to talk, he kept silent as Aurelia took care of the bill. Without a further word, hey wound their way between the tables, down the steps and out the door.
