"You still are." she replied. He was mysterious, still. He would always be, that was just Ryan. It was one of the qualities that Kali liked. He always kept her guessing. After he spoke again, though, she was quiet. She thought it best to give him time to say what it was that he needed to say. They had all the time in the world, after all. There was no need to rush him any.
Her feet pressed against the soft earth, as they had all day long. Kali liked it better than the concrete sidewalks or roads of tar in town. She loved the forest and the clean, fresh air that it offered. The little creatures that scampered through the little green shrubs and plants. The nearby pond with the fish that swam and the frogs that leaped, the turtles that simply sat. Kali loved it all.

Ryan walked in silence for a few moments before building up the courage to tell her who it was, and then of course, being able to deal with her reaction. He took a deep breath and tilted his head to the sky. It was my family. My own parents. They have been for years of my life, trying to push me into the life of a Hunter, a true Hunter. They have known I have never believed in what they do, and now they either want me back for they still think they can, um, persuade em to join. Or they want to kill me for they have realized that I never will be like them. He ran his hand over the tree bark as he passed a white cedar tree. The white bark seemed to glow in the night, lightning their path. He stopped walking and turned to look at Kali. I have always been ashamed of my family. He paused, thinking maybe he should go one, but in the end he didnt know what else to say. He tried to crack a joke. Failing. Guess you won't ever have to worry about meeting them, trying to impress them and then wondering late at night if my mom likes you. He bit his bottom lip, realizing at the hint of a future between them. He stammered out a cover up. Man its a nice night out.

Kali kept her eyes down as she listened, deciding that it might be easier for him if he didn't have to make eye contact with her. She always found it easier that way, at least, when she was trying to explain something difficult. When he finished, she looked up at him. "I'm so sorry Ryan." was what she said to him. She didn't know how to respond to it all, but she wanted to comfort him. Somehow. So she put her arm around his waist, walking closer to him as they strolled through the night woodlands.
Kali couldn't help but smile at his comment about meeting his parents. But she kept the grin to herself, thinking it might be weird if he caught her. But still, she spoke softly, "If it helps at all, you won't have to meet my parents either. But I don't think that you'd have to worry, if you did have to meet them. They'd have loved you, Ryan. I'd bet my life on it."

Ryan starred off into the trees, seeing how in the dark they seemed to blend together, only standing out when the moonlight shined on them. When she apologized he was a bit taken back. He never understood why people said sorry when they had nothing to do with it. It was never their fault, they couldn't change it, or fix it. He said thanks anyways. When she placed her arm at his waist, he couldn't help but pull her closer to him, putting his own arm around her as well. He leaned his head down and placed a gently kiss on the top of her head then let out a warming laugh when he made a comment about him not having to meet her parents.
I guess we are both out of the woods. He said teasing them both. But when she added that she was sure they would have liked him he couldn't help but feel the warmth spread through his body. He didn't know why, but that comment made him feel so good inside. Mine would like you too, minus the Innocent part. He gave another chuckle trying to keep the conversation light and not too..well, dark. And depressing. We should start to head back, its getting late. Oh jeez, its near 10. He couldn't believe how long they had been out, a lot longer then he thought at least. He started to turn back, arm still around Kali.

Kali turned with him, headed back towards the cabin. It was dark in this part of the woods, and every inch of the forest grew darker as the sun drew farther and farther away from them. Her face turned to the sky. The moon was but a sliver, shining brightly only on the little areas that caught its light. It was like the smile of a Cheshire cat. Leaves swayed, dancing almost to some beautifully slow song that Kali couldn't hear.
She looked up at Ryan, his face caught in front of the star-lit background. His eyes were brighter than any such stars, his hair a better dancer than any poor leaf. Kali smiled rather slyly and gently kissed his bottom lip. "Your lip looks better." she said afterward, noticing how quickly the black and blue had begun to fade even in a day's time.

Ryan flashed his eyes open for a split second when he felt Kali's lips on his, it seemed so out of the blue. He smiled and gave a nod of his head. It was your expert love that healed it so fast. And maybe your kisses. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer, lifting her feet off the ground. His arms slid down to her hips, holding her off the ground and keeping body pressed into his. He pulled her legs around his waist so she was now sitting on his own hips, in almost a backwards piggy back ride. He let his mouth caress her soft velvet lips for several moments before pulling back and giving her one of his famous smiles. He kept walking with her on his hips, ducking under a stray branch once in a while. I think we should relax tonight when we get back. Light that fire, get the blankets out and cuddle in the fire light. Maybe make some hot chocolate like the old times.

Kali laughed. Expert love, he had said. She was no expert. In fact, Kali barely knew a thing about love. He was her first boyfriend, if they were indeed in that kind of a relationship. She wasn't sure when something like that was official or not. She had no clue. But she sure hoped that he was. She couldn't imagine feeling this way for anyone else.
She beamed as he picked her up. No one had held her since she was a little girl, and no one had ever held her like that. His hands were both strong and soft. She couldn't feel the callouses on his palms. Her eyes closed as he kissed her. It seemed with every kiss she enjoyed his lips more. Then as he smiled, Kali's heart melted. She loved his smiles. Her arms wrapped around his neck and she let him carry her, hoping that she wasn't too heavy for him.

Ryan kept walking, making sure he one, didn't trip on anything and two, that he didn't bang her head into any low branches. He linked his two hands together to provide something like a chair with his arms so she felt secure. He gave her a sideways smile as he looked into her eyes and right then he felt the butterflies cause a raucous. And, of course, right then, he tripped over a rock. He caught himself and didn't drop Kali, but he did look like an idiot. You see what you made me do? He teased her, licking his bottom lip as a smile spread across his face. He cool see in the distance through the leaves the dim light from the cabin. He saw it flicker in the darkness and growing even dimmer. He realized it was the fire burning out so he quickened his pace only a little so he could save it. Hmmm, I should see about getting some electricity out here. I think it should be easy enough since we aren't too far from the road. Im surprised it hasn't been done yet.
He reached the cabin door and slowly let her legs go, sliding her body gently to the deck. He unlocked the door with the key and walked inside. He went right to the fire and began poking it and adding a few more logs. When the fire was again fierce, bright and warm, he went to the chairs and grabbed the blankets. He took one of them and spread it out over the floor, folding it in half so it was thicker and softer to sit on. He plopped down and patted the floor next to him, motioning for her to join him. He took the other blanket and opened it up for them to use.

Kali gasped as he stumbled. It had startled her. But then she laughed, clearly glad that neither of them fell. "You were the one who wanted to hold me." she teased him back, making no effort to stand again.
When the reached the cabin, she helped him add a little wood to the fire before settling beside him. She kicked her shoes off across the room, and they skipped across the floor slightly before coming to a rest near the wall. Kali took the second blanket and spread it over the both of them, feeling the warmth of the cozy fabric. The fire danced in the hearth, its light gliding over the walls, furniture, and the two little hide-aways that lay on the floor.

Ryan watched her tug off her shoes and kick them away, and when she sat down next to him he leaned back on his hands, stretching his legs out. He scooted over so he was right next to her, giving her the option of resting against him and leaning on his. He looked into the fire and watched the flames dance over the logs, casting shadows on the walls. The crackling wood popped and snapped making him feel like they were camping, for odd reasons. He let out a content sigh and just simply listened to the sounds around him. He heard an owl hoot outside and he listened intently. I think we have a barn owl living in that old barn out there. Good thing to, it can eat all the mice and keep them away form the grain when we actually get the animals here. When he said grain he suddenly though horses when he knew grain was for anything. He looked at Kali and said, Do you ride? He used to ride when he was younger. Not great, but enough for an easy trail ride and he hasn't been on a horse in, oh god, years. He thought about it and felt something stir in him. It would be nice to be able to ride again, maybe with Kali on a horse next to him. he was sure there were tons of trails out there, they just had to find them.

Kali thought back. "Once or twice, I think, we went to the fair. I rode a pony there, but that's as close as it comes." she told him. Kali had never needed a horse to roam the forests. She always favored her paws to an other's hooves, but now she thought it might be fun to ride with Ryan. She might embarrass herself if she got bucked off, or if the horse went ballistic, but she could get over her probably terrible riding skills with practice. Horses were expensive, though. They would have to save a while if they wanted to get a few of them. Other farm animals were cheaper.
Kali asked him, "Do you ride?" She wondered what kinds of horses Hunters used. If they were actually horses, or Innocents forced to do their bidding. Kali thought it best not to ask though. It might have brought back bad memories, or ruined their happy conversation if she did. To settle her curiosity, she decided that Ryan probably wouldn't have rode a horse that was human.

Ryan had tilted his head to rest upon hers and listened to her words. He tried to picture young Kali riding a pony at a fair, but he just couldn't seem to get it right. He gave a small quiet chuckle at the thought and moved on, not wanting to embarress her. However when she asked ie he rode he was for some reason a bit shocked by the question. Although he should have expected it if he asked her the same thing. When I was younger. The mansion has a small stables in the back. Its been years though, but from what I can recall, I enjoyed it very much. Now that I think about it, i don't know why I stopped. He sat still for a moment, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the cabin, the woods and the fire just enjoying being with her. There is an auction in a month or two. We could go and see if you find a horse you like. We got enough room here. We don't need fancy ones, just a good trail horse. If you want. He added hastily.

Kali laughed and stroked his arm softly with her fingers. "Stop worrying about what I want." she told him sweetly. "Let's do something that you want to do for a change. If you are happy, then so am I." Trail riding with Ryan sounded wonderful to her. Anything in his company was wonderful.
The fire crackled and popped, like hot candy as it cooked. Kali chuckled inwardly. Why was she always comparing things to food? She wasn't sure, and neither did she truly care. It was just a thought. She could feel Ryan's head resting against hers, his hair lying softly against her face. She smiled, taking in everything about him. His touch that calmed her, his eyes that hypnotized her, and his scent of pine that entranced her. The strong muscles that flexed beneath his skin. His voice that vibrated like sweet music. Most of all, his heart that none could match... Kali sighed, nuzzling her head against his shoulder softly, just glad that he was there with her. She had never enjoyed one's company so much.

Ryan gave a small chuckle and planted a soft kiss on the top of her head. I really don't care what we do, Im pretty much happy as long as im hanging with you. And I think if I really wanted to do something, I would let you know. Im not that much of a push-over. He laughed some more. He may have been a really nice guy and very open to almost anything, but he certainly was not a push-over. He is easy going but when he does not want to do something he will speak up. He shifted his weight a little more to get more comfortable and wrapped his arms around Kali giving her a gentle, yet strong squeeze of affection. He starred at the wall watching the dancing shadows from the firelight when a thought returned to his mind.
This might be an odd question to ask, but...are we dating? Like, I dunno, officially. he has never liked a girl enough to ask or to even care. For he used to be a player and always moving from one girl to the next, but the night he met Kali something clicked inside him. He just knew that he wanted to be with her, and no one else mattered.

"I don't know a thing about love." she told him honestly. "I was wondering the same thing. Are we 'officially' dating?" Kali kind of returned the question, but then added, "I hope we are. I really enjoy your company, and I like you more than I've ever liked anyone. I can't think of anyone else I'd rather call my boyfriend." Her face went a little pink, and she stammered with embarrassment, "But, you know, if you think that's weird or whatever... or you just don't feel that way, it's okay..."
Kali tried to shut herself up, and was eventually silenced by her own humility, forced to wait quietly to hear what he thought. Her eyes glanced down, not wanting to meet his. What if he didn't feel the same way? What if she totally just made him feel awkward with what she had said? Her mind wandered back to that tone he had used, softer and sweeter than ever, just before they had left for town. It calmed her a little, even now.
