Face Claim: Oleg Yankovsky
Appearance:
One look at Anatoly, and it isn't terribly difficult to guess what his talisman is. Not only is his height imposing, but so is his build; the man is strongly featured and built like a tank. While time has affected his once-blinding reflexes and slowed his legendary two-second change time to five, he is still obviously a force to be reckoned with. He is normally dressed plainly, if not professionally, with a buttoned shirt, neatly pressed trousers, and the standard white lab coat, and he appears for all intents and purposes a normal citizen of the town. His black hair is always neatly combed, and his grey eyes are surprisingly kind and intelligent. The only visible sign of his past that Anatoly bears on his person is a large scar that crosses his left eye, faded slightly with time.
Anatoly is fluent in Russian and has extensive training in both Sambo and Systema. He is a decent tracker and an expert marksman.
Personality:
At first glance, Anatoly's personality doesn't appear to match his talisman at all. He doesn't tend to stand out, all things considered; he's usually polite, fairly tactful, and even kind, if always reserved. While he enjoys a break as much as anyone else, he tends to appear married to his job more often than not, and is introspective to the point of stoicism, remaining generally serious in mood. He treats everyone he meets with courtesy and respect, but holds himself at a cautious distance. The single exception to the rule is his adopted daughter Yekaterina, with whom he is considerably more open and relaxed.
However, even as he remains consistently formal and reserved, the more perceptive members of town can easily see that this is only one side of him. Regardless of who he is now, Anatoly was once known as one of the most fearsome Hunters in Russia for a reason. That reason is now tightly leashed and his formidable temper is kept firmly in check--he is not a man who is easily provoked--but those who manage to push his buttons successfully rarely, if ever, get a second chance to repeat the mistake.
History:
(Apologies in advance for the absurd length.)
The lives of Hunters and Innocents are different in Russia: more organized, more efficient, more brutal. The two never mingle unless it is in battle, preferring to stay in small communities limited to those they know to be on their own side. Undecideds, as far as both parties are concerned, simply don't exist; those who don't manage to stay hidden are systematically snapped up by one or the other, or literally torn apart by both. Those who survive being fought over are instantly assimilated into the militias maintained by both sides. There is no pretense of dark or light there, and those with talismans fight only because it is all they know how or care to do.
It was into this bloodstained arena that Anatoly was born. While he was the oldest son in his family, he was the last to receive his talisman. As a Seeker in one of the most powerful Hunter tribes in Russia, he was immediately put to work as a medic, as he had no practical use on the battlefield otherwise. It was not a capacity at which he would have ordinarily excelled, as he had neither the disposition nor the natural ability required to make a doctor under normal circumstances, but he had little choice in the matter. In any case, he learned quickly, by practical application; at that time, battles between Hunters and Innocents raged almost daily, and he found himself having to adapt to the situation whether he was naturally good at it or not.
Anatoly finally received his talisman at age twenty-five, having gotten married in the interim, and, as if to make up for lost time, almost instantly distinguished himself as one of the most cunning and brutal Hunters in the tribe. Lack of natural healing skills notwithstanding, he had an innate talent for strategy and tactics as well as the sheer physical strength to often carry his plans out himself. In a matter of months, he had made a name for himself; a few years more, and he was being spoken of in hushed whispers by even Innocent tribes. Anatoly rose in the ranks to the rough equivalent of a commander; valuable as his abilities in battle were, the elders in his tribe believed his talents were better used off the field. Along with his usual duties, he also began teaching in a grueling training program intended for young Hunters with especial talent.
He was twenty-nine when both his wife and young son were killed in an Innocent attack. While it was hardly a turning point for him, and while he told himself that it was something he had expected all along, something in him changed nonetheless. He had never been much of a talker before, but he became positively silent now, and he threw himself into his work with unsurprising force. As time passed, his plans of attack grew increasingly merciless, albeit even more brilliant than they had been before.
It was around this time that an orphaned girl by the name of Yekaterina entered his classroom. She was one of the youngest Hunters to receive her talisman in years, and her sheer ability allowed her to become Anatoly's star pupil in mere weeks. Before long, he had come to view her as something of a daughter, and, unwilling to lose what little excuse for a family he had left, began to reconsider his place as a Hunter for the first time in his life. Still, a legacy as great as that of his Hunter tribe could not be thrown aside so carelessly, and it took years of growing disillusionment and increased introspection before he finally made a decision.
When that decision was finally made, no-one in the tribe was expecting it. As far as they could tell, both Anatoly and Yekaterina had simply vanished without a trace, with no explanation given for their departure. As Russia was no longer safe for them, they fled east to Canada, and their steps soon led them to Noatak. There, Anatoly drew on his old medical knowledge and set up practice in the clinic. Yekaterina learned to settle in and lead something resembling a normal life, and Anatoly soon gained a reputation among the local Hunters and Innocents for being a competent doctor who treated injuries regardless of allegiance. Rumors still abound that one or both of the sides may attempt to forcibly turn him to their side, but for the moment those rumors remain exactly that--just rumors.
