Appearance:The first thing someone would notice about Damian is the cane he walks with. It is jet black yew wood with silver dragon's head and neck handle. Damian's stride is harried by a jerky rise-and-fall movement. Looking behind that, his eyes are ever-watchful, and are a haunting yellow hazel. They make him look older than he really is. His nose is sharp and hooked, and his lips are thin. Damian's hair is dirty blonde, normally clumpy and defies gravity, so he helps it along by spiking it into something akin to a mullet. He is always tense and keeps his back to the wall. He has a tendency to avoid people's eyes, keeping his head ducked while in public, and eyes low, but not to the ground. Some would say he was long-legged and lanky. He is muscular and tall, with broad shoulders, and just looks over-all like someone you wouldn't want to mess with. The fact of the limp would make him seem weak, and in a way he is crippled forever, but he still has his hidden knife and his .45 Caliber tucked out-of-sight somewhere on his person. Damian normally wears dark-themed shirts, jeans and black Converse shoes, with a leather jacket, no matter what time of year it is.
Personality: One thing above all others fascinates Damian. Destruction. Captivated by fire, laughing in the face of danger, Damian will risk life and limb just to be in the middle of chaos and annihilation, making him a very good arsonist. He simply cannot get enough of it. People must watch their backs, and him, to keep themselves from getting put in the middle of one of his schemes. Damian is instinctive and acts upon sudden impulses, whether it be to walk a different way to a place than he normally does, or to suddenly stop to tie his shoe. Normally, it's a good thing he does. He's done the first option before and avoided a huge shoot-out in that street where most participants died. The second saved him from getting run over by an 18-wheeler whose driver had fallen asleep at the wheel.
Damian is calm until he is picked out of the crowd, even if it's a compliment. He likes being in the crowd, so long as he remains anonymous to everyone around him. It's uncomfortable for him to be given compliments or attention, and even more uncomfortable for him to be totally ignored. But if he had to choose between the two, he would rather be ignored, because he's used to it. He likes when people know he's there, but just don't care enough to make a deal out of it. Damian is watchful, alert, observant, and takes in minute details that most people would overlook. He can't very well move quietly, but he doesn't draw attention to himself, prefering to remain unnoticed and not speak openly or freely. He is tense and ready for anything. He hides his homosexuality very well, because it embarrasses him.
Mother: Wynn Mercer-Sage
Father: Richard Mercer
Siblings: Annika Mercer
Family of Note: Fiona Sage [grandmother]
History: Born and raised in Rome, Italy, Damian was simply ignored by his parents. They never laid a hand on him, whether in anger or love, to harm or comfort him. He pretty much did not exist to them. His single sibling drew of their attention, his older sister, Annika. Growing up quickly was his only option, and so he’s known his talisman for a long time. Choosing to ignore the war completely, he focused all he could on just being someone to his family. He tried constantly being around, helping out (even though it went completely against his nature), to try to get a “Thank you,” or a “Good job!” that did not come. By 12, he had become so reclusive that he would, purposefully, avoid his whole family for days to even weeks at a time. They never cared. Annika knew he was there, she was just too scared to defy their parents to show it. Richard and Wynn were unbelievably overbearing and assertive, always pushing her to new heights. All A student, player of three sports, popular, beautiful, perfect girl. She felt sympathy for Damian, but did not act upon those feelings. Damian did not just roll over and play dead for his parents while they focused on their star daughter. He became a delinquent, failing his classes, insulting teachers and people in general to their faces, going so far as to get arrested for starting fights with others, then getting arrested a handful more times for thieveries and other crimes, trespassing and vandalism included. He knew there must have been a better way just to get his parents' attention, but he couldn’t find it. Yet no matter how hard he tried, he never found it. He starved for what they could give him, and yet wouldn't.
Damian once got into a fight with a classmate during class. The school building was four stories tall, and the guy quite literally threw Damian out of the window from the third story. He landed badly on his left leg, snapped most of the bones in it. Had he wanted to, he could have helped the leg heal so he wouldn’t be crippled, but he hadn’t cared enough to. Rehabilitation was required for it and he was not going to worry about it.
But it wasn’t long before Damian grew tired of the game with his parents. He gave it up, threw in the hat, and left Rome with forced bravado on the day he turned 19, just a week before he would have graduated high school. He knew he would never become anything in Rome, so he made sure they saw him when he left. He burned the house down. Damian's long-term fascination with fire and destruction led him to the idea. With nothing but a lighter, some extra gasoline stolen from his father's car, blankets and paper, he watched the house burn from a distance. No one was in the house while it burned, and Damian didn’t stay around long enough for his family to return from wherever they had gone.
He got in contact with a grandmother he had never met who happened to live in Noatak, Canada. Fiona Sage had long known of her son's strict policy with his children, but the two had grown very distant and rarely ever spoke. Fiona almost tumbled over her own words when Damian explained his situation, and she also spilled that she, too, had a talisman. A kangaroo, she explained. Neutral. Damian almost didn’t want to believe her, but accepted it. Fiona also explained that she had expected something like this to happen to Richard’s children. She just hadn’t expected one to burn down their nice, expensive house. That gave Damian a laugh. Between the two of them, they arranged for him to live with her in Noatak. Damian hasn't given up his criminal records, though. If anything, they keep getting worse. Fiona wants to make up for what Damian wasn’t given through his life, but now he recoils from it and quickly excuses himself from the area. He doesn’t really know why. Quickly adopting the title Hunter, he is quite handy to someone who wants to have something burned down or demolished. Destruction is his specialty and his passion.
Talisman: Canadian Lynx - skilled hunter, intuitive, calm, watchful, ready to pounce
Description: Almost two feet at shoulder-height and three and a half feet in length, Damian's talisman may look cute, but isn't something to mess with lightly. With 28 teeth, 4 of which are long, sharp canines, and four sets of sharp claws, he could easily tear into something and rip it apart. His sharp senses aid him in watching and waiting. Dense, silvery-brown fur covers his body. Large paws and long legs built for wading through deep snow also come in handy while trudging through mud.
