The room was warm; low dawn filtering through the beige curtains and speckling the two lovers’ faces with light. Reyes and Caleb were lying quietly on the rather large bed, both of them curled closely together under the blankets. Reyes had been awake the whole night, his mind flustered yet knowing. Yet, Caleb was blissfully unaware of what was happening as he lay asleep, nestled affectionately into Reyes’ neck like a puppy.
Reyes shifted his head slowly, careful not to disturb his beloved from sleep, and squinted as the shafts of morning glow danced across his face. Today was the day.
”Dammit…” If only he could stay here for a bit longer. Right now, he feared the morning more then death itself. Today was that day. Today was the day he had to run far away from anything that ever meant anything to him, to be a refugee in a world only fit for the powerful and cruel. But what else was there he could have done? What else could he do? The Yakuza was threatening him and everything he held dear; his family, his friends and everybody in between.
A deep, trembling sigh escaped his throat. He would have to leave before the sun came up, and then he would disappear. He had done his research, he wasn’t that stupid, and found a little town in Canada that pretty much didn’t even exist in the government’s eyes. It was called Noatak, and he hoped he would go there so that he could get more time to figure out what to do.
“Goodbye Takki-chan, I doubt we’ll meet again…” A tear trickled down the side of his face, followed by another, as he kissed his lover on the forehead as gingerly as he ever could; the other stirred, but just barely. Caleb looked so serene in his slumber, so delicate and fragile. His breath was warm against his bare chest as he shifted to get a better level.
As slowly as he could he eased Caleb off him before getting up, the soft carpet under his feet not betraying him. He quickly wiped away the tears from his face as he put his clothes on; a pair of ripped up jeans, a white t-shirt with a grey silhouette of a crow on the back and white Converse. It was something comfortable but good for running just in case. Taking a few bags he quickly stuffed in all that he would need; food, extra clothes, money, anything else he could think of. In another bag he put in the rest of anything that could be a trace that he was ever here, these things would be burned and buried. He wanted to vanish without a trace, leaving nothing.
He decided not to leave a note. The less he left behind, the more easily everybody would forget about him. For the second time in his life he would have to leave everything behind and start over, and the very thought of it crushed him. Reyes continued to work mechanically, unthinkingly, doing everything he needed to do to erase himself. He was no longer human, only a body working out of desperation.
Reyes was dying from the inside out.
He knew it, and anybody who met him would know it. But people were naïve, so he decided to deceive them with a smile and let himself rot. People wouldn’t know the difference; they’d just think he was a pretty optimistic guy with a good nature. If only they could see his soul, if only they could see him die. He would act happy, and sometimes he would really be, but he would die eventually. His heart and soul and mind would breathe their last breaths before his physical being would, but that was the price to pay. His physical self would be gone too, and he hoped it was sooner rather then later. But until then he would take the hits, take the anguish and the suffering and everything else that came along.
That was the price to pay.
Standing at the door and looking back at Caleb, he felt his heart crack in two. He lay curled up in the blankets; his lips parted slightly, his breathing hardly a whisper. The sun was coming up and shining into the window, dust catching the light and forming a shimmering halo around Caleb’s sleeping form. Reyes went over and kneeled beside the bed, leaning in and giving him one last kiss.
A kiss goodbye.
He took a single glance over his shoulder as he walked out the door. His Caribou remained sullenly quiet; he knew and was very well aware of the scene that played out before him.
Today, at the door of his room at L'élégance Hotel in Arles, the true Satoshi Ando died.
