Kali cringed as the man screamed. It was ear-splitting, and any remaining birds in the forest took flight. She looked down at the little toe. It was disgusting, not only because it was bleeding and detached, but because dirt and sand and yellow plaque lie under the nail's surface. She looked up at Ryan, her feline eyebrow raised. She wouldn't speak, knowing that he was in his element right now. But her face said it all. I can't believe you put that in your mouth! She shivered, her fur standing on end. Remind me to check that you've brushed your teeth before I kiss you next. Her eyes wandered back to the little toe. She kicked it aside with a lazy paw. Her nose wrinkled. It reeked, too. Like fish, and perhaps worms that had been dead for two days. Though she doubted that that was truly what the smell was.

Ryan placed a paw on the foot that was now covered in the mans blood. He pushed down on the spot where the little toe had once been. The man gasped and squirmed. Ryan kept the pressure on the foot before asking the question again. You going to tell me who it was? Or shall I continue? He flashed his teeth as a warning for he didn't really want to rip off another two. The Hunter groaned once and spat at Ryan, throwing a curse in there. Ryan squinted his eyes at the man and gave a low growl. Leaning down, his large head covering the mans foot in shadow. His teeth clamped down on the next toe, he paused, then took two toes at once in his mouth and ripped them both off. He again, spat them out in the dirt. The man screamed and yelped. You should already know who it is! He yelled at Ryan. Ryan took a step back, taken back and caught off guard. He ran through the names of other Hunters who would have the authority to issue commands. His eyes widened in shock as he realized that he knew who it was. The one person to go against him and hunt him down was one of the elders...his own mother. Ryan growled and lunged at the man, wrapping his jaws around his neck and giving a harsh twist. He heard the snap faintly. he dropped the mans neck and without saying anything to Kali turned and began walking away.

Kali leaped back as Ryan came upon the man, giving him some room. After the Hunter was dead, she followed Ryan, leaving him be in his silence until he wanted to talk. Her paws padded lightly on the ground carelessly, no longer in need of stealth. She quickened her pace to walk beside him, face turned to the ground with the handgun still in her jaws. Something wet touched her head. Then another. Rain. She looked up to the sky, and then back at Ryan. The feline broke into a light run, urging the hyena to do the same. They would have to get back to the wood quickly to keep it as dry as possible, or at least get it unloaded before the area around the truck was too slippery to do so.

Ryan walked in silence with his head down, watching the leaves and sticks pass him by as he padded past them. He was thankful that Kali didnt try to speak with him yet, and ask questions. He needed time to think about what he learned and how to deal with it. He looked at up at the darkening sky when he felt a single raindrop fall unto his nose. He flicked an ear to the side as Kali broke into a run, he followed by quickening his own steps, moving into a quick canter. He let the silence continue, he listened to the rythmic breathing and panting of both him and Kali. When they broke out of the trees at the cabin he jumped to his feet now in human form. He went right to the truck and without saying anything put the gun in the bag and went to start unloading the wood. He carried each piece to the barn, leaving the doors open for easier access. He grew agitated about himself and he was not happy with what he did. But he couldnt have let him go, or else the other Hunters would know where they were. Im sorry about that. He said as he carried one of the last planks of wood into the barn.

Kali helped him unload the wood, enjoying every drop of rain as they met her skin. When at last Ryan spoke, she looked up. "Don't be." she told him. "You did what you had to, and I'd have done the same. Besides, it's not as if you harmed someone who wasn't guilty." Kali shoved the last plank up into the loft. It rustled against the ancient hay and cobwebs, and the few mice that had taken shelter from the rain bustled out of the way, squeaking.
She walked closer to him as she lead the way back to the cabin, shutting the tailgate as she passed. "You know," she began. "I think that what you did was fair. You did warn him, after all. A Hunter wouldn't even have shown that much mercy." Kali opened the door for him, and then closed it behind herself. Seating Ryan at the table, the girl busied herself in the kitchen, deciding that this was a good enough occasion to surprise him with the things that she had bought. Kali went on talking, "And you're not a Hunter, Ryan. Not at heart." She turned around to look him in the eyes, smiling as she glimpsed the sweet brown of his irises. "You're more of a man than that."

Ryan went along as they unloaded the last of the wood and took in Kali's words, feeling a little better then he had before. I thought she was right, but he still felt like he could have done something better. When they left the barn he lifted his head to look at the sky and watch the raindrops fall to the earth. Ryan followed her into the house and was surprised how wet they had gotten in only the few minutes they had been outside. he sat at the table and took a deep breath watching Kali move about in the kitchen. He smiled, liking the view, and smiled more at her comments, they made him feel better. Ryan stood up from the table and moved the few feet into the kitchen, he walked right up to Kali, placing his hands gently on her hip bones and began pushing her slowly backwards so her lower back gently hit against the kitchen counter. He gently pinned her against the table and leaned in really close to her, his lips just barely caressing her skin as he spoke. Thank you. It means a lot to me that you think that. He tilted his head so slightly to the side, enough for his lips to connect with Kali's lips. He kissed her gently yet passionately for a few minutes before pulling away. Ive been waiting all day to do that. but it was well worth the wait. He took a single step back as if not to crowd her, for he still never knew if he was crossing the line with her. He didnt even know if they were officially dating...like what did she call him when he wasnt there? Her friend?

Kali's grin only grew as he kissed her. She forgot all about the three toes he had ripped off. It was as if he had never done so. She put her arms around his neck, drawing his face close to hers. Kali inclined her head, so that her forehead touched his lightly, and she could look up into his eyes. "You didn't have to wait, and it'd have been worth just as much." She smiled, kissing him softly on the lips before letting him go. "Now, you wait at the table. I'm going to make you a surprise." she told him, setting about the kitchen again. Sugar, spice, nuts, chocolate, peanut butter sauce, and general baking necessities went into a pan, stirred, and set in the oven to bake. Kali loved old ovens like this, wood-burning, stove on top, oven beneath. It warmed the whole house, and let its scents and aromas flow through the air in a river of delicious smells. Kali make the icing, chocolate flavored, and then went to the table to wait with Ryan. She pulled her chair closer to his and then sat down, her smile still upon her lips from his kiss.

Ryan smiled and turned to walk back to the table, sitting on one of the chairs. He sat there hands linked together resting on the table top, his dark brown eyes following her every move. He was so curious to what she was doing, and not being a cook he couldnt figure it out. He smiled as the scents hit his nostrils, his stomach gave a small rumble. He loved being cooked for, it reminded him when he used to live at home when he was younger, and before everything turned, well, bad.
When Kali took a seat next to him, he reached out and took her hand into his. He gently tugged on her hand, pulling her out of her own seat and onto his lap. He wrapped his arms around her, letting his head rest gently against her body. Where did you look to cook so well? You seem to know everything as if you went to school to become a cook. He said, giving her a little squeeze with his arms around her.

Kali rested her wrists on his shoulders and lay her head atop of his. "At the orphanage when I was a kid, we had different chores that we had to do. Some days, I was in charge of cooking. -Under the care woman's supervision, of course. When I liked it so much, other kids would trade chores with me whenever they got cooking duty." That was also how the snakes got put into the spaghetti. Kali smiled at the memory. Her fingers combed through his hair softly. "And what about you?" she asked him. "Where did you learn to build and mend things? Or were you just born brilliant?" Kali wouldn't doubt him if the last was true, because she knew at least one thing. He wasn't taught to have as good a heart as he had. It must have come to him naturally, and she was so very glad it did.

Ryan smiled, she had mentioned once before that she was from an orphanage, and he had always wanted to ask more but for some reason he felt that it would be rude. He gave a gentle happy sigh as he felt her fingers combing through his hair, he loved the feeling, it felt so intimate, like they had known each other for a long time. When she asked about his him smiled thinking back. I just like doing it. Always have since I was young. I built a tree house with the help of my dad when I was like 11. it was my first big project that I completed. I love using my hands and seeing the wood being put together into something amazing, or useful. He thought back to the memories of him and a few friends playing in the tree house. We used to make pulleys with baskets on the end to bring stuff up to the house. We loved that thing. He let out a small chuckle. That smells really good whatever it is.

"That sounds wonderful." she said, imagining Ryan in his tree fort. "Maybe we could make one, some time. If we have extra time." Kali smiled, holding back a little chuckle. They might have a lot of extra time now, that they were hiding. She wondered if it would be okay if she still went to work, but didn't bring that up just yet.
She grinned when she heard that he liked the smell. She hoped that he might like the taste just as much. "Cake." she told him. "Chocolate cake." Kali played with his hair now, twirling it over her fingers. It didn't work very well that way, because his hair was too short. So she combed it to one side of his head and then to the other with her fingers, just to keep her hands busy. She had made the cake to cheer him up. It was kind of what Italians did. Ate. Hungry? Eat. Sad? Eat. Happy? Have a party, and eat. She chuckled a little. It was amazing that she wasn't a very heavy person, they way she cooked so much. Now that he seemed to be cheered up already, he might even be able to enjoy the food more. "I bought desert stuff at the store today to surprise you." she told him. Kali had originally meant to surprise him by adding a little desert to his lunch every day when he was out at the barn, but a surprise could never come too early.

Ryan closed his eyes as he felt her hands play with his hair, he gave a soft smile that was really only for him. When she said they could make a tree house sometime Ryan looked at her and laughed lightly. He could just see her in cougar form, laying on the floor of the tree house, looking out the window, or the little porch, flicking her tail causally taking her cat nap. Ryan nodded. Sure, we can do that when we have time. Im going to start the paddock fences tomorrow. I think I can get the main fence up, the one that is already there. But it wont take me too long to add one more paddock. I think I want like three paddocks for the various animals. Then when those are done Ill start on the barn. Ryan sat in silence for a minute before letting the very corner of his mouth curve up when she was saying that she had bought surprise desserts for him. He was really amazed how out of the way she had gone for him the last day or two.

"I can help you with them, if you want." she offered. "And then work on the garden in the evenings." It wouldn't take her long to plant a few seeds and water them. She would put up the fence just before they sprouted, to keep out the rabbits and the other pesky critters that loved the vegetables.
Kali got up to check on the cake, opening the oven ever so slightly to peek. She looked at, considering. Maybe a few more minutes. She returned to Ryan's lap, her hands finally resting again at his shoulders and leaving his hair alone.
"Do you believe..." she began, "that all things have a reason?" It was a random question. But it had been on her mind, subconsciously at least, for a while.

Ryan nodded and was happy that she wanted to help, if she wanted to of course. He would never have her do anything she didnt want to, not that he could make her if he wanted to. She was a fierce and stubborn woman and thats one thing he loved about her. Ryan shifted his weight in the chair as she got up to check the cake, and opened his arms to allow her to sit back down in his lap. He once again placed them gently around her waist. He cocked his head to the side when she asked if he believed if all things have a reason. He thought about it for a minute or two before giving her an answer. No. he said in a very matter of fact way. I think some things happen for a reason, like a chain of reactions, whether good or bad. Then I believe that there are other things, that nothing can control, no matter what happens they are either bound to happen, or have a 50/50 chance. Its totally random and a big crap shoot. If that answers your question. He smiled a bit knowing his answer practically covered every possible answer, but that was what he believed, and to him, it made sense.

"I'm just trying to understand it all." She explained, so that he knew why she had asked the question. "So much has happened since I met you. Before that night Oceana, I had a normal life. But now, everything's changed. Hunter's are after us, and we're in a cabin in the middle of the woods." But her voice wasn't sad, in fact, it was actually happy. "But I met you." she said, looking up at him, "And I like the changes in my life. I'm happy when I'm with you. I love just being around you, and I don't feel lonely anymore. I like our new plans, for a barn and a little farm and such. I don't really miss anything about how things were before, you know? And I just wonder... what the reasoning behind it all is. Maybe you're right. Maybe it's just a chain of events. Maybe I just think too much." Kali shook her head and got up again to pull the cake from the oven. She let it cool a little while she pulled milk from the icebox, and poured a glass for her and Ryan. Then she iced the cake, making pretty little designs in the frosting with the knife. She cut two pieces and put them on plates, first carrying the cake to the table, then the milk. She grabbed two forks and some napkins and sat down in the chair beside him.
