Ryan listened to her talk about all the things that have happened since she has meet him. And he hoped that she didnt regret anything, that she wasnt just saying those things to make him feel better. But none the less, he gave her a soft smile. I think that these events have been mostly a chain of events. If there had been a reason for any of those things to happen, I think that it had been buried so deep that we won't know what it was. He watched her get up and get the cake, her watched her hands move over the cake in a skilled manner spreading the frosting and making pretty designs. That looks great Kali. When she sat down and placed everything on the table he rubbed his hands together and even licked his lips. Its been so long since I have had cake. I feel like a young boy again. He let out a throaty laugh before picking up the fork, he paused waiting for her.

Kali chuckled when she saw his face. "You speak as if you're an old man!" she exclaimed, happy that he was pleased with the cake. She gave thanks to the Lord, thanking him for all of their blessings, their safety, and their plans to go about living in the forest with a farm and garden. She finished by thanking him for the company of Ryan, before picking up her fork and biting into the cake. It tasted good and warm going down her throat. She took a sip of milk and wiped her mouth on the napkin to rid the milk mustache, though a little chocolate still remained on her lips.

Ryan laughed at her comment and bit into his cake after he joined her in giving thanks. He gave a good strong 'mmmm mm' at the taste of the cake. He chewed slowly not wanting it to end. He looked at the cake, the gentle swirls of the fluffy cake and the waves of the frosting, he slowly cut into the piece and continued eating, feeling like he had died and went to heaven. He paused in his eating and look up at Kali. So, if you don't mind me asking, why were you an orphan? he had always been curious as to how she ended up in the orphanage but he never felt like he was close enough to ask such a personal question. But since the time they have spent together, including fighting off other hunters he thought that maybe he could ask her. If she didnt feel comfortable he would drop it. Ryan scraped the last bit of cake off his plate and got all of the frosting on his fork to lick up before pushing the plate farther back on the table so there was room for him to rest his arms. He would clean up once she was done speaking.

Kali took another bite of cake and swallowed before answering. "Well," she began, "I was born in the hospital at Halloween. As my parents rested that night, the nurse fed me. When she ran out of formula, she took me with her to the storage room to get more. That was when Hunters murdered my mother and father. If she hadn't taken me with her, I'd probably be dead to, as well as herself." she told him. "Because it was Halloween that I was born, and my parents died, I got a little reputation at he orphanage. They called me unlucky, or jynx, which extended into 'Black Cat'. Don't cross my path, 'Black Cat,' they would say, 'I want to get candy tonight.' Or anything else that they needed luck for, they would warn me to stay away from them." Kali shook her head. "But I got them back. I'd take the snakes that they'd leave in my bed and put them in their spaghetti." Kali chuckled. "Damian would take the frogs that they left me and sneak them into the pudding."

Ryan tilted his head to the side trying to imagine what it was like for her, growing up like that and knowing what happened to your parents. Im surprised you trusted me at all, with that history. You must hate the Hunters. He said, leaning back in his chair and stretching his legs out. He smiled and chuckled when she spoke of getting them back, and sneaking snakes and frogs into their food. I guess I should pay attention to my own food? He teased her. He stood up, picking up his plate and fork and carried them to the sink, washing them thoroughly with his hands, drying them and then putting them back in the cupboard. He looked out the window and saw the sun just slowly beginning to set, still enough to be daylight. He glanced at the clock surprised at how fast the day went on, seeing it was close to 4:30pm. He looked around the cabin trying to figure what to do now. He noticed a small bookshelf in the far corner and walked over to it. It was only half full with books, maybe about 15 or so. Look at these. They are really old. He touched the spines of the books, dust falling off them to the floor.

"Hmm." she said. "With passion." Kali did hate the Hunters. Perhaps even more than the Devil. But she looked up at him. "You're not a Hunter, Ryan." she repeated. "Not really." He was probably the only ex-Hunter that she would ever trust. He, in her mind, was the only one with an actual heart. And not only did he have a heart, but he had a good one.
She followed him over to the bookcase after she finished her cake. "They are old." she agreed, blowing the dust off of one of the cover, sending it up in a plume about the air. The pages were yellowed with age, and the cover scratched. It looked antique, and Kali loved it. She turned the delicate pages slowly, as if their ancient fibers might snap beneath her fingers. "It's a Bible." she observed.

Ryan looked over her shoulder and looked at the ancient book. It really looks like a hundred years old. Thats amazing. He began looking through some other of the books, picking them off the shelf and carefully going through their pages. On his third book the dust finally got to him and he let out a rather large sneeze. Phew, this dust is relentless. Do you like to read a lot? For these books might keep you busy. We can also get some in the library and or barnes and nobles. There is room on this bookshelf afterall. He remembered that she was reading a book when he saw her last and thought that maybe she might want a few books of her own on this old shelf. I can always build you another shelf when you fill this one up. He pulled the forth cook off the shelf and blew the dust of its cover. He let out a small 'ooo'. The book was a dark red with gold markings on it, the font of the title was cursive and all wavy, also in the gold color. It was so worn he couldnt make out the title, but the cover made it look really special. Look at this one. Looks important. He said to Kali, moving closer to her to show her the book.

"I think I'll have enough to keep me busy. I brought a few books with me when we came here, but I'll buy some later if I finish them." she looked at the little bookshelf, doubting that she would fill it up. But it was nice of him to offer.
Kali looked over his shoulder at the little red book in wonder. "What is it?" she inquired curiously. Something about it set it apart from the rest. It was better kept than the others were, and seemed in just general better condition. "Some one really loved this book." she told him, pointing to the end of the cover. It was smudged with fingerprints, as if it had been read many times. But something told Kali that it wasn't a story book.

Ryan shrugged his shoulders and turned the book over in his hands. I'm not sure what it is. He opened it, afraid that the pages would fall out or rip to shreds. He ran his fingers over one of the pages, trying to follow the print in it, the words that were not too faded he tried to read. But he couldnt make too much sense of it for practically every other word was unreadable. He gave up and handed the book to Kali. Maybe you can make more sense of it then I can. But it looks almost like a journal. He wiped his hands on his jeans to get rid of the dust and walked over to the fireplace, taking the last of the logs and putting them in the fireplace. He lit the match and made sure the draft took before standing. That was the last of the wood. Im going to go chop a few more logs before the sun sets completely. He turned to walk out the door, grabbing the black gloves that were thick enough for the job.

Kali set the book on the table, wanting to come with him. She put the dishes in the sink, deciding to wash them later. After those were done, she would attempt to decipher the text in the book.
She hurried out the door after him, her feet stumbling on the porch before she caught herself to keep from falling. Kali laughed at her own haste. Why did she rush? She didn't know the answer. She felt as if she was on a leash, and Ryan unknowingly held the other end. Since the Hunter had appeared from the tailgate, she didn't want to be more than fifteen feet from him. Kali looked away at the thought. It was stupid, and she embarrassed herself.

Ryan looked over his shoulder as he heard her rushing feet and gave single small chuckle at her clumsiness. He slid the gloves over his hands and flexed them a few times, clenching his fists tight to make sure the gloves allowed his hands the movement he needed to wield and axe. You afraid of being alone? He teased her but honestly he thought it was very cute, and he was flattered that she felt so much safer with him, or she just loved his company that much. Either way, he love it.
He walked over to where the axe was stuck in the log and yanked it out. He picked up a few pieces and put them on the cutting log, standing upright so he could split them in two. He glanced at Kali to make sure she was far enough away for this could be dangerous. He moved his eyes back at the log, eying it and calculating the distance and strength needed. He raised the axe, every one of his muscles tightening, he swung his arm with large effort and the axe came hurtling down on the log. With a loud crack the log split in two. He repeated the action several times before he soon had a small pile of wood at his feet. He slammed the axe back into the cutting log and tugged off his gloves. He picked up as many logs as he could manage and began walking towards the house. Its a really nice night out. Bit chilly, but nice. He said as he laid the logs in the bin next to the fireplace.

"I'm not afraid." Kali said quietly, watching him now as he began cutting the firewood. She couldn't help but watch every muscle flex as it was used, and every log crumble away in two halves. He was strong, this, she knew. Such a thing was proved just as she watched him. Handsome, strong, charming, cute -sexy, as he said he went for-, kind-hearted, brave, gentle, could he really blame her for not wanting to leave him? Kali chuckled quietly at the thought, watching him jam the axe back into the log. She piled the other pieces of wood in her arms and followed him back into the cabin, placing the logs by the fireplace as well.
"It is a nice night." Kali agreed with him, gazing outside. She took him by the hand and lead him back out of the cabin. Kali took him to the forest trails, just to walk and talk with him. "You remember the first night we met?" she asked him, and then went on. "We went to that rock in the clearing, and I searched your pockets." she laughed quietly at the memory. She hadn't trusted him then, but she did now.

Of course you're not. He teased her back, glancing at the fire and then adding one of the logs to it, so it didnt burn down too low. When she took his hand he was a bit shocked for he was not expecting her to pull him back outside. He followed her willingly, letting his fingers play with her fingers. He looked up through the leaves of the trees and smiled when he saw the sky dotted with stars. Its so clear out here in the woods. He said taking in a deep breath, feeling the crisp cool air. He continued to hold her hand, letting his thumb run over her soft skin, stroking her so to speak. When she mentioned the first time they met he couldnt help but laugh. Yes. I remember that. I thought you were gonna jump me or something. And I kept thinking to myself why I was even bothering to try to get to know this crazy girl. He teased looking over at her to see what her reaction would be. The breeze picked up and the trees shook their leaves, an owl hooted in the distance and Ryan couldn't help but tense, wondering if it was a Hunter. After all, pretty much any wild animal could be a person. And you would never know if it was Innocent or a Hunter. Ryan unknowingly squeezed Kali's hand just a little tighter.

Kali laughed. "And I wondered why I was leaving the bar to wander around in the dark with this mysterious boy." She put emphasis on the word. He was still mysterious to her in many ways, but she understood him a little better than she had. It was amazing to her how quickly he had won her trust, but such a boy as Ryan was certainly deserving of it.
The stars glistened above their heads like snowflakes in the summer, refusing to fall into the warmth of the earth where their lives might end. They twinkled and sparkled, their laughter ringing through the silent air, carried only by the gentle wind, which in itself was barely a whisper. Kali sighed at the beauty of it all, wondering where God had gotten the idea for such a masterpiece.
Then she felt Ryan's grip tighten on her hand, and she looked up at him, tightening her grip as well, if only slightly. "Something wrong?" she asked him, searching his face for signs. Kali still wondered what had gone through his mind when the Hunter spoke his last words, but decided to let Ryan tell her on his own choice.

Ryan smiled at her comment about him, when they had first met. The leaves above them rustled in the breeze, singing their song while the branches cracked and snapped. The night grew darker as they walked on, but Ryan didn't mind, he liked being outside in the fresh air. Thought I was that mysterious did you? He asked, turning his head to look at her, her face dark yet with highlights from the moon. He felt his body still tensing, but not as bad as before, he relaxed his hand to hide it better. But then he figured she would know anyways and that the best thing would be to probably tell her. He did trust her after all. I know who sent him. He didn't know how to start off, but that was the best he could come up with. He felt almost embarrassed, that it was his own family trying to hunt him down. Whether it was to the death, or to capture him he wasn't sure. He felt so ashamed of his family, and the life that they lead and had forced him to lead as well.
